Gifts In Action
Hemlock Girl Scout Council is grateful for the support of local businesses, foundations and individuals for helping to change the lives of girls for the best in central Pennsylvania. A gift to the council directly supports the valuable programming girls need to grow strong. While we have much to be proud of, there are still girls who need our support.

“The girls are excited about the opportunities in Girl Scouts. When you put your faith in children and show them you believe in them, they will succeed,”
- Donna Cheatham
Harrisburg School District coordinator of the EXPLORE After School program. |
|
The primary purpose of the EXPLORE After School Program is to help students stay on the right path to adulthood by providing organized, constructive activities in a safe, supervised environment when the school day ends.
This after school program was started in March 2003 as a collaboration between Hemlock Girl Scout Council and the Harrisburg School District
The program serves girls ages 6 to 17 in the Harrisburg community whose financial, social or other circumstances have prevented them from joining Girl Scouting in the past. Girls Scouting can help give these young women an advantage in life by providing role models, values, skills and self-esteem. All of the Harrisburg community benefits from the positive development of our youth for the future.
Lack of financial resources is often a key barrier to Girl Scout participation in the City of Harrisburg. Funding from program partners is used to subsidize the cost of this program to include $10 membership due per girl (required by Girl Scouts of the USA), Girl Scout handbooks, membership pins, sashes and badges for each participant as well as program supplies.
In addition, while Girl Scouting has traditionally depended on adult volunteers to carry out programming, the council has experienced tremendous difficulty in recruiting volunteer in the City of Harrisburg. The resources provided by program funders is used to ensure that qualified instructors are available to lead the girls weekly activities based on the Girl Scout handbook and in pursuing badges if they choose. All activities focus on the beliefs and principles of the Girl Scout Promise and Law.

Commit-To-A-Girl
Girls are making choices today that will affect them for the rest of their lives. By launching its very first national online fundraising initiative, Girl Scouts is helping to make those choices count. Commit To A Girl raises funds for local councils and the national organization to help give girls everywhere the opportunity to benefit from the Girl Scout experience.
Self-confidence, leadership skills, respect for others—through Girl Scouting, girls develop the skills they need to avoid unhealthy behaviors, make responsible decisions, and overcome the challenges they face every day. By contributing to the Commit To A Girl campaign, you’re helping fulfill the dream of making Girl Scouting available to every girl who wants to join. You can even create your own personalized Commit To A Girl page and invite friends and family to join you in supporting Girl Scouts nationwide or in your community.
Shape the future. Commit To A Girl and make a difference in her life.
